I am more than excited to be an Emberling Ambassador for Sabaa Tahir and Razorbill. Over the coming months, I’ll be posting some fun things pertaining to this KICK ASS series. I’m starting things off by re-posting my review of book one, AN EMBER IN THE ASHES as well as sharing some sneak peeks into A TORCH AGAINST THE NIGHT!
Oh, and did I mention – a giveaway? You can be the lucky winner of 1 of 10 ACRs of the highly anticipated second book in this series!
I WILL TELL YOU THE SAME THING I TELL EVERY SLAVE.
THE RESISTANCE HAS TRIED TO PENETRATE THIS SCHOOL COUNTLESS TIMES. I HAVE DISCOVERED IT EVERY TIME.
IF YOU ARE WORKING WITH THE RESISTANCE, IF YOU CONTACT THEM, IF YOU THINK OF CONTACTING THEM, I WILL KNOW
AND I WILL DESTROY YOU.
Laia is a slave.
Elias is a soldier.
Neither is free.
Under the Martial Empire, defiance is met with death. Those who do not vow their blood and bodies to the Emperor risk the execution of their loved ones and the destruction of all they hold dear.
It is in this brutal world, inspired by ancient Rome, that Laia lives with her grandparents and older brother. The family ekes out an existence in the Empire’s impoverished backstreets. They do not challenge the Empire. They’ve seen what happens to those who do.
But when Laia’s brother is arrested for treason, Laia is forced to make a decision. In exchange for help from rebels who promise to rescue her brother, she will risk her life to spy for them from within the Empire’s greatest military academy.
There, Laia meets Elias, the school’s finest soldier—and secretly, its most unwilling. Elias wants only to be free of the tyranny he’s being trained to enforce. He and Laia will soon realize that their destinies are intertwined—and that their choices will change the fate of the Empire itself.
Right about now you are probably wondering why it took me so freaking long to read this absolutely amazing book. Honestly I have asked myself the same thing, multiple times. The thing we need to focus on is that I have NOW read it and I crazy loved it and so now we can talk about it.
AN EMBER IN THE ASHES was the kind of book I read slowly, taking in every word and letting it work around in my brain a bit before moving on. My normal reading speed is that of a cheetah…you know if cheetah’s could read…so this was new for me. Something about this title made me want to absorb every single word, not just read it.
This was something that was so easy, Tahir’s writing is beyond beautiful and has the perfect balance of description and action. I find that I dislike a lot of fantasy novels because of the overly explained world building and a full page on what someone it wearing or 48 pages on a battle – there’s only so much I can take. But this, this was remarkable form word one and damn it I am so anxious for more!
Suspense, mystery, budding romance and danger around every turn – I am ashamed at myself for not picking this up sooner. This is the kind of review where I just want to gush like a lunatic for ten pages!
Pre-Order A Torch Against The Night
A Torch Against the Night takes readers into the heart of the Empire as Laia and Elias fight their way north to liberate Laia’s brother from the horrors of Kauf Prison. Hunted by Empire soldiers, manipulated by the Commandant, and haunted by their pasts, Laia and Elias must outfox their enemies and confront the treacherousness of their own hearts.
In the city of Serra, Helene Aquilla finds herself bound to the will of the Empire’s twisted new leader, Marcus. When her loyalty is questioned, Helene finds herself taking on a mission to prove herself—a mission that might destroy her, instead.
