Penguin-Tour-Feature

On Saturday the 26th, Penguin Teen On Tour made it’s way to my favorite indie bookshop, Red Balloon. I was beyond exited, and honestly really nervous as Penguin had offered me the ability to interview Sabaa Tahir, author of AN EMBER IN THE ASHES, in person.

All you bloggers out there will agree that we often have the barrier of e-mail or even the phone to shield of from doing, or saying something totally stupid, so when you sit in front of a New York Times Bestseller and have only fifteen minutes, you’d better be prepared.

Obviously it would stand to reason that I sent days planning, researching and coming up with the PERFECT questions. Not so much. See I was so worried, I kept putting it off, think of things and saying to myself “I’ll remember that.”, and that never works. So I called in my part-time co-blogger Katie, met her at a restaurant a few hours before the event and got creative.

The interview is in 3 extremely fun parts:

1. AN EMBER IN THE ASHESE Senior Superlatives
2. Rapid Fire Nerd Question
3. AN EMBER IN THE ASHES Custom Mad-Lib

An Ember In The Ashes Senior Superlatives

If you look back in your year book, or the year book of a friend you will likely find a page filled with “Most Likely To’s”. These are Senior Superlatives. Since the Mask’s are graduating this year, I figured this would be an appropriate activity. I gave Sabaa only one rule, she could only use each character once.

MOST LIKELY TO BE LATE TO THEIR OWN WEDDING: Keenan

MOST LIKELY TO OWE YOU MONEY:  Izzie

MOST LIKELY TO MAKE A PACT WITH THE DEVIL TO NEVER AGE: No one, many would make a pact with him, but not to never age.

MOST LIKELY TO KNOW ALL THE MOVES TO THE MACARENA: Ferris

MOST LIKELY TO PROVE MEN CAN THRIVE LIVING IN CAVES: Elias

Rapid Fire Nerd Questions

If you’ve read Sabaa’s author bio before, of spent any time reading her tweets or checking out her Tumblr page you will know that she is a self-proclaimed nerd, and owner of many socks.  I gave her 4 rapid fire questions that touched on these topics, and here is what happened:

FAVORITE COMIC BOOK HERO?
Miss Marvel

FAVORITE COMIC BOOK VILLIAN?
Lex Luther

FAVORITE PAIR OF SOCKS?
They are covered with mindless, happy sharks with their mouths open.

NERDIEST POSSESSION?
All my Harry Potter paraphernalia, simple because of the sheer amount of it.

An Ember In The Ashes Custom Mad-Lib

Who doesn't love Mad-Libs? Katie and I took the synopsis off the back of the hard cover of AN EMBER IN THE ASHES and made it into a mad-lib for Sabaa. She knew she was doing one, and that it had to do with her book, but had no idea what the chosen section was until I read it to her

Here is the mad lib version, followed by the regular version.

Mad Lib Version. Words in RED are the ones she replaced by request.

I’ll tell you everything I tell every monkey.
The Madagascar has tried to leap this dragon countless times, I have slapped it every time.
If you are punching with Elsa, if you contact them, if you think of spelunking them, I will know and I will toilet paper you.

Original Version:

I will tell you the same thing I tell every slave. The resistance has tried to penetrate this school countless times. I have discovered it every time. if you are working with the resistance, if you contact them, if you think of contacting them, I will know and I will destroy you.

    1. It helps when they author is as fun and laid back as Sabaa was, but I was bit nervous. I always am, no matter how many times I do it!
