Sleeping has never been so scary. And now waking up is even worse!
Charlie Laird has several problems.
1. His dad married a woman he is sure moonlights as a witch.
2. He had to move into her purple mansion, which is NOT a place you want to find yourself after dark.
3.He can’t remember the last time sleeping wasn’t a nightmarish prospect. Like even a nap.
What Charlie doesn’t know is that his problems are about to get a whole lot more real. Nightmares can ruin a good night’s sleep, but when they start slipping out of your dreams and into the waking world—that’s a line that should never be crossed.
And when your worst nightmares start to come true . . . well, that’s something only Charlie can face. And he’s going to need all the help he can get, or it might just be lights-out for Charlie Laird. For good.
Yes, that Jason Segel. The one from How I Met Your Mother, and The Muppets. The same one that voiced a character on Despicable Me. Him. And yes, THAT Kristen Miller, New York Times Bestselling author of The Eternal Ones series.
Now that we have that out of the way, and trust me I was sufficiently surprised myself when I flipped the back over over and saw Lily's husband looking back at me…we can move on with the review.
I very seriously do not recall enjoying a Middle Grade novel, as an adult, quite so much. I read this heft of book in just a few hours, not moving once! Alright, so I went to have a very grown up snack of Frosted Flakes, while reading my book – but I never put the book down once. How's that for talent? My initial plan was to read a few chapters and hand it over to my 11 year old to catch up so we could read it together, but I was totally incapable of setting it down. She's now got the whole thing to her self and is rather excited that there is a character named Paige in the book.
Equal parts humor and horror, the Nightmare world fascinatingly built and I would very seriously LOVE to see this made into a movie simply for the images and detail to jump from the page and be real for a short time. Imagine a world created by Holly Black and Tim Burton together…that's where your nightmares live, and that's what Segel and Miller created.
You are going to love the story of plucky Charlie who has a new step-mom, and a new room in a not-so-new house. Plagued every night by nightmares of a witch and her cat, his sleep begins to dwindle to nothing. Little does he know, things are about to get worse, and not all the Nightmares are staying in the Netherworld. This series is on my shopping list for holiday gifts and birthdays until the end of time!
