{Interview} with Author Amy Plum

A long, long time ago. In a galaxy far far…wait…no that’s not right…Way back, when I first started Me, My Shelf and I (there, that’s better!), I got three eBooks from NetGalley. They were to be the first ARC’s I would even review and they would become very close to my heart.

Of these, was DIE FOR ME by one Miss Amy Plum. Amy has been a busy bee since 2010, writing both UNTIL I DIE (The Revenants #2) and IF I SHOULD DIE (The Revenants #3) which will be out May 2013 from HarperTeen.

We are excited she has taken a little time out of her busy schedule to come back to MMSAI for a fun little interview!

Amy, thank you so much for taking time to join us again on MMSAI. It’s been a long time since you were here, and no doubt some things have changed since then!

Until I Die came out May of 2012 and the final installment of The Revenants, If I Should Die is out May 2013. How does it feel to be done (or very nearly done) with the series?

I actually turned in my very last tiny changes to IF I SHOULD DIE about a month ago. Now that it’s out of my hands, it is that nerve-wracking period where you just wait to see if the critics who get the advance copy are going to like it or not! I’m glad I have two other projects I’m working on so that I don’t just sit around and obsess. I’m doing a digital novella from Jules’s point of view which should come out in April, as well as working on my new JUNEAU series.

Which of your characters gave you the most challenges while writing the trilogy?

None of my characters were a challenge to write. They all came to me fully formed, with their own personalities and history. So writing them was like having a conversation with old friends. Although sometimes they did surprise me! And it’s really hard to tell people which of the characters is my favorite. Of course I love Kate and Vincent. But I would live with Papy and Mamie in a heartbeat. I want to hang out in Jeanne’s kitchen. I know I’d be friends with Ambrose, Jules, Charlotte and Georgia. And I want to hug Jean-Baptiste, Gaspard, and Bran (and see how uncomfortable it makes them when I do!)

What is the greatest little bit of knowledge that you learned from writing a trilogy?

It’s good to have a plan in advance. *cough*

Look at your covers. They are, no pun intended: To Die For! Come on…pick one, which do you love most?

I have to say that even though the UK/American covers are drop-dead gorgeous, the art historian and Paris lover in me adores the Art Nouveau cover of the German version. The Norwegian covers are so pretty too – it would be hard to choose. But I do feel very lucky that I was actually asked my opinion on the UK/American covers. They let me choose the color for Book 3!

Plum, Amy - Die For Me GER

You’ve been able to travel for book signings and such since last we talked, what’s been the most interesting/fun experience from that?

It was very bizarre going back to Birmingham, Alabama, where I grew up, and speaking at the Homewood Public Library—which was my neighborhood library when I was in high school. I felt like crying when I saw that I had packed the auditorium out and was so touched to see people who I had known in high school turn up with their kids and be so enthusiastic. I never thought I would be there, speaking about a book that I WROTE in front of my hometown crowd. It was magical.

Tell us, anything in the works after The Revenants series is all done?

Yes! I am currently working on a digital novella from Jules’s point of view called DIE FOR HER that will be released by HarperTeen in April. And I’m also working on my next series: a duology about a girl named JUNEAU.

Lastly, and just for fun, if I dumped out your purse what might I be surprised to find?

Let me go look...

Okay, I swear on the complete works of Shakespeare that this is what I pulled out:

French checkbook (one blank check torn out and crumpled)

Paris mapbook

The New Yorker magazine (my FAVORITE)

Wallet

Clinique face powder

Christian Dior lipstick #759 (rose extase)

Dior lipgloss (raspberry scented)

My business cards

My Louvre membership card

My French nationality card

A pile of receipts with an Asterisk sticker mashed on them

2 pieces of my son’s broken scooter

A broken piece of breadstick

Plastic knife

Shoe repair ticket for my old boots (I wear things for years)

Loose change totaling 8 centimes

Amy, thanks again for stopping in!! We hope that it won’t be so long before we have you back again!!

ABOUT THE AUTHOR:

3353516

After being raised in Birmingham, Alabama, in a rather restrictive environment, AMY PLUM escaped to Chicago to an even more restrictive environment at a university that expelled people for dancing. (And where she was called to the dean’s office for “wearing too much black”.) After all of that restrictiveness, she was forced to run far far away, specifically to Paris, France, where she only wore black and danced all she wanted.
After five years in Paris, she ventured to London, where she got an M.A. in Medieval Art History, specializing in Early Sienese Painting (1260-1348) mainly because it promised almost no hope of finding a paying job afterward.
Amy managed to find work in the world of art and antiques in New York. But after almost a decade of high-pressure lifestyle in the Big Apple, she swapped her American city for a French village of 1300 inhabitants.
After signing with HarperCollins for the DIE FOR ME series, Amy left her job as an English professor at Tours University to write full-time. She now lives in Paris with her two kids and big red dog Ella.
She is a huge fan of Edward Gorey and Maira Kalman (and collects both of their books/art), as well as David Sedaris, Amadeo Modigliani, and Ira Glass.
