MOST AMAZING INTERVIEW….EVER!
1. Like, woah...your book got HOW MANY hits on Wattpad!?
I know, crazy, huh? I started to write my book, Life’s a Witch, and posted it simultaneously on the writing community site called Wattpad [Link]. By the time I finished uploading the book, I had about 6 million reads of it. And after a year I had 19 million reads of my little paranormal action book!
2. That’s basically insane—and also so freaking cool!! What were you thinking as you watch that number climb? And, don’t lie...we all know you checked it now and again!
At first, I was on there just hoping a few people would read it and enjoy it. I mean, after all, isn’t that why we write? We’re compelled to tell stories and hopefully people will like them. The numbers were slow at first. When I had a few thousand reads of it, I thought I’d hit the jackpot. Then, after a while, the numbers got into the hundreds of thousands. But more than that, people were really enjoying the story! They were tuning in every Saturday for new uploads, calling themselves twitches (the term I use for “teen witches” in my book) and even acting out scenes in public. When I reached my first million, my mind had officially blown. After that, the numbers just got bigger and bigger…
3. A book can’t get that many hits without attracting some attention in a good way...tell us what happened next. (you guys, this is so cool!!!)
Well, I was nearing a year of having the book online and my fans kept asking me where they could buy the book—even though they could get it for free on Wattpad. So, I decided to self-publish. At this point, a reporter at Publisher’s Weekly heard about my story and decided others needed to hear about it, too. This lovely man did an article about me online, and after that, I was inundated with calls from foreign publishers and agents about the rights to LAW. Because of that, I ended up signing with my foreign rights agent, who introduced me to my now literary agent. A few weeks after I self-published my book, the reporter at PW did a follow-up article on me and then soon after that, I was written up in the Huffington Post. At this point, it was all over. Just a few weeks after signing with my agent, we were hearing from all the major publishers and quickly went into an auction for the US rights to Life’s a Witch between four major publishing houses. In the end, I decided to go with Simon & Schuster Books for Young Readers in a 3-book, 6-figure deal. That was toward the end of January 2012…just a little over a year after I began writing the book.
4. So now here you are, book deal in hand and What The Spell releasing in parts over the next several months with the full novel out in January...what’s going through that creative brain of yours...tell me your feelings on this whole situation.
Omigosh, it’s hard to believe that this is my life now. I dreamt about becoming an author since I wrote my first novel at the age of 15. When most girls were daydreaming about their wedding day, I was planning my book launch party. The fact that the prequel/spin-off to Life’s a Witch, called What the Spell? [LINK], is already out in several e-installments (for .99 cents I might add!) and will be hitting bookshelves nationwide on January 29th is mind-boggling. Now, I just hope that people buy the book and like what they read!
5. Everyone hopes to publish some day...what was your journey like? Did you query this novel before it went on Wattpad?
Although it may seem like it, my journey to published author didn’t happen overnight. I went through nine years of hard work and rejection (and six other books) before I got my big break. I had an agent at one point…and then he dropped me when he couldn’t sell my books. Basically, everyone I contacted said, “We like your writing, but…” or “The story’s good, but we’ve got one sort of like it already…” My heart broke a little each time I was told no. I even wondered if I should give up on my dream.
Luckily, by the time I found out about Wattpad, I’d re-evaluated my priorities. I decided that I needed to start writing simply because I loved it and not necessarily for an end-result. Of course, I would’ve loved to be published, but I’d been operating under the misconception that there’s only one way of becoming a successful author:
A) An agent recognizes your talent and takes you on as a client
B) The agent sends your stuff out to publishers
C) A publisher becomes willing to take a chance on a first-time author
D) You become a success because you are published by a traditional publisher
When I started to open up my mind to the fact that we live in a really exciting time, full of a ton of different publishing options, that’s when things finally started to happen for me. I found out about Wattpad and decided to give it a try and the rest is history. If I’d given up back when others had told me to, none of this would’ve happened. It just proves that you shouldn’t quit before the magic happens!
6. Okay...enough of the writer babble let’s talk about YOU! Tells us 5 interesting things about yourself that we couldn't find out by Googling your name.
· I’ve tried out to be a judge on three different reality shows
· After getting my book deal, I took my family to Disneyland as a thank you for all their love and support.
· I fully believe in ghosts and think that one of my old childhood homes was haunted
· I’m obsessed with true crime. My mom was even stalked by a serial killer as a young adult and I once spent several weeks trying to contact the FBI to find out who it was.
· One of my ex-boyfriends was on a WB show.
7. So, The Avengers...tell me...if you could steal just ONE Avengers powers...which would you take and why?
Hmmm, this is hard!!! Well, I’m a huge fan of kick-ass girls. They’re my favorite protagonist in movies, television and books. I think it’s important for young women to have other young women who are strong, powerful, smart and human to look up to. My favorite heroine of all time is Buffy from “Buffy the Vampire Slayer.” I love her because she impacts the world in a big way, but she’s still fallible. I think we’re so used to seeing men as the ones who save people in distress, that we forget that women can do the same. Because we are awesome. So, to make a long story short, I’d go with the Black Widow. She kicks ass, is super smart and looks hot while doing her thing. Why would I need anything else?
8. Lastly, what’s next for you Miss Brittany? What can we expect from you in the future?
I hope a lot! Like I said before, What the Spell? comes out in hardback January 29th everywhere (you can pre-order it now! [LINK]). Then, a new and improved version of Life’s a Witch will publish May 2013, followed by the sequel called The Witch is Back in January 2014. We’ve released some magical makeover tutorials to go along with the story on my YouTube channel [LINK] and recently shot the WTS? trailer and an exclusive scene from the book, which are absolutely going to blow you away! Hopefully we’ll sell the TV/film rights and (eventually) you’ll be able to see it on a screen near you. And of course, more books! I have a bunch of ideas and a few that have already been written. You’ll have to stay tuned to find out more!
