Cheryl Rainfield, author of the amazing novel Scars is with us today as part of The {Teen} Book Scene tour with a great Ten’s List!

Ten Things You Can Do Instead of Hurt Yourself

1) Reach out to someone and tell them what’s going on and how you feel

2) Ask for a hug, or give one. If no one’s around, hug a pillow or a pet

3) Write out how you feel, or draw, dance, or sing out how you feel

4) Listen to music that makes you feel happy and hopeful

5) Read a favorite book that comforts you

6) Watch a feel-good movie

7) Go for a walk and notice everything around you, feel yourself in your body

8) Figure out what the emotion is and get out that emotion. Anger—scream into a pillow. Pain—sing or draw or write it out, self-soothe. Sadness—cry it out, self-soothe, distract yourself. Fear—hold a pillow, reassure yourself, ask for reassurance, distract yourself.

9) Eat a favorite food, and notice every bite, every taste

10) Look at images or photos that make you feel good, happy, comforted.

Cheryl’s book is hard hitting and completely relevant and I hope that every teenager would read it. I mentioned before in my REVIEW of the book that I wish I had had something like this to read when I was a teenager, it would have made me feel a lot less alone.
