{Blogger Babble} In Light of New Information

First off, Happy Earth Day! Everyone go out and plant something today or recycle a book (sharing IS recycling!). Bloggers Orders ;D

Now back to business: My post from yesterday has been quite the hot topic on Twitter lately - well not my specific blog but the topic I chose to write it on has been all over the place.

Like I mentioned in my post about the Dreaded Required Follow, I'm a reasonable and logical person and because of this I am going to run a little experiment of sorts.

Now if you recall in my blog I defended the required follow to enter a contest. And I still do, but to better understand the other side, and to see if it works as well as they say, for several months I am not going to require a follow to enter a contest. What's it going to hurt if it doesn't work? And if it does work, well like that would be a bad thing! LOL.

I might, here and there, to better get to know my readers ask if they are a follower, but will note on the form heavily it has no bearing on the contest. I need to be able to measure who's a follower and who's not if I want to be able to have some kind of information to break down later.

Thank you Twitter, like a good court room drama you have really given me something to think about and helped me see I need figure out what works best for me! In order to do that I have to try something new!

Now this isn't to say I won't go back to my Required Following Ways, this is a trial run. I know how many followers I have now, how many were from contests (what can I say, sometimes it pays to be mildly OCD) and I'll weight that against the new number in several months!

  1. I think that there is a law about compensation for entering your contest. Like if it's a sweepstakes, meaning you get nothing in return (i.e. no new followers, etc) then it's legal. But if it's a lottery (meaning the entrant must do something to gain said entry) then it's illegal.

I'm a little fuzzy on it, and honestly wish I could cite my sources. =/

That being said, I don't usually mind the required follow. But I will only do it if the blog is one that I actually want to read.

  2. Is this a web based law you are citing? The internet, I know, has different laws and rules then contests held "in person".

I'm now trying to find some info on line because I am interested in it. I can't really imagine what people have been doing for years is illegal and no one has gotten in trouble. I would assume asking them to do something in return would be in the way of, asking for money or what not.

If you find your source, let me know I would love to read up! :D Thanks!

  4. It's only illegal if someone has to PAY to enter a contest - there is no legality about following a blog to enter.

I required a follow for my first contest - and surprisingly on my second when I DIDN't require a follow - but made it an EXTRA entry, I got more folllowers! I found that interesting! :)

    Happy experimenting!
